In a squint, medically known as strabismus, only one eye looks at the object of interest. The other eye may turn in, out, up or down. Treatment involves the child wearing spectacles to stop him or her from making the excessive focusing effort, and covering up the good eye with a patch (occlusion) for varying periods, until vision is restored to its former level in the squinting eye. At this stage, the squint will often alternate from one eye to the other. This is an encouraging sign and a muscle balancing operation at this stage will often complete the cure.
