SCOPE OF THE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY DEFICIENCY PROBLEM
An Independent Risk Factor
Sedentary behavior is an independent risk factor for increased incidence and progression of chronic health conditions (CHCs). It is also an independent risk factor for increased mortality from CHCs. In fact, the majority of U.S. deaths are now from CHCs.
- 7 of 10 deaths (1.7 million of 2.4 million deaths) in the U.S. in 1999 were due to CHCs.
- U.S. data 1987-1990 show that there were 1.6 million deaths from chronic diseases, which represented 24.3 million years lost, with an average of 14.8 years lost per death.
- No regular exercise accounted for 256,686 deaths from CHCs according to 1986 data and these deaths constituted about 12 % of the total 2.1 million deaths that occurred in 1986:
205,254 deaths from coronary heart disease (35% of these deaths)
43,063 deaths from stroke (29% of these deaths)
8369 deaths from colon cancer (15% of these deaths)
Deaths from type 2 diabetes were not determined in this study.
- As the U.S. population grew 17% from 1986 to 2000, the adjusted premature number of deaths from no regular exercise is 300,000 (excluding diabetes, as the 1986 report did not include it).
Sedentary Lifestyle and Premature Death
Sedentary lifestyle accounted for 334,144 premature deaths in the U.S. from CHCs, according to our estimates, which are based on numbers of deaths reported on the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, and American Cancer Society web sites. Percentage reductions of deaths were taken from the percentage of prevalence when physically inactive populations were compared to moderately physically active populations in the literature.
The number of deaths from sedentary living is three times greater than that from microbial agents and also exceeds all deaths from firearms, illicit usage of drugs, sexually transmitted diseases, and motor vehicle accidents. The number of deaths due to physical inactivity (334,000 annual premature deaths in the U.S.) trails tobacco (430,000), but exceeds obesity (300,000). Thus, a major cause of death in the U.S. is sedentary living. Physical inactivity is one of the top two causes of all-cause mortality in the U.S. today, and directly contributes to the current third-highest death rate in the country, which is obesity.
In the last 100 years, the leading causes of death have dramatically shifted from the scourge of infectious diseases (in 1900), to cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (in 2000) - all of which are directly associated with sedentary living. In essence, physical inactivity constitutes the new scourge for humanity. Some site-specific cancers, such as colon cancer, are also associated with sedentary lifestyle.
