3. Indications for Use.

  – uncomplicated cholelithiasis: biliary sludge; dilution cholesterol gallstones in gall bladder, if there is no possibility to extract them by surgical or endoscopic methods; prevention of relapses of stone formation after cholecystectomy;
   – chronic active hepatitis;
   – acute hepatitis;
   – toxic (along with them medicinal) liver injuries;
   – alcohol-induced liver injury;
   – non-alcoholic fatty liver disease;
   – primary biliary liver cirrhosis;
   – primary sclerosing cholangitis;
   – cystic fibrosis (mucoviscidosis) of liver;
   – atresia of intrahepatic biliary tracts (among them inborn atresia of biliary tract);
   – dyskinesias of biliary tracts;
   – biliary reflux-gastritis and reflux-esophagitis;
   – biliary dyspeptic syndrome (in event of cholecystopathy and dyskinesia of biliary);
   – prevention of liver injuries when using hormonal contraceptives and cytostatic drugs.

4. Action

Oral administration of Ursodiol favors dilution of cholesterol gallstones of gall bladder. Provokes partial or complete dilution of cholesterol gall stones.

5. Posology and Administration

Posology and administration should be established individually. Usually it is administered in a dose up to 10 mg/kg a day. A daily dose should be taken single-shot in the evening. Length of treatment should be determined individually.

6. Counterindications

 – x-ray-positive (with high content of calcium) gall stones;
 – non-performing gall bladder;
 – gall-gastrointestinal fistula;
 – acute cholecystitis;
 – acute cholangitis;
 – liver cirrhosis in decompensation stage;
 – liver insufficiency;
 – kidneys insufficiency;
 – bile passages obturation;
 – acute infection diseases of gall bladder and bile ducts;
 – gallbladder empyema;
 – hypersensitivity to Ursodiol.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

Capsules Ursodiol should be administered with caution in children from 2 to 4 years of age, as difficulties are liable to occur in swallowing of capsules, though Ursodiol does not have any age limits in the use.
On application of Ursodiol for the sake of dilution of gall stones it is necessary that the following conditions are satisfied: the stones should be cholesterol (x-ray-negative), their size should not exceed 15-20 mm, gall bladder should remain a functional one and it must be full of stones not more than half-way, patency of both cystic duct and common bile duct should be preserved.
In long-lasting Ursodiol administration U/S of bile passages should be done.
After complete litholysis it is recommended to continue Ursodiol therapy during, at least, 3 months in order to expedite the dilution of the stones remainders which are too small to be detected and for the prevention of relapse of stone formation.

8. Interface with Other Medications

9. Overdosing

Cases of overdosing are not known. The most likely manifestation of severe overdosing will be diarrhea.

10. Side Effects

Nausea, vomit, pain in the stomach, diarrhea or constipation, allergic reactions (rash, skin itch), calcination of gallstones, compromised liver function, blood compositional disorder, backache, psoriasis aggravation, hair loss.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

Ursodiol may be administered in pregnancy only in case of extreme necessity. If there is a need of Ursodiol administration in the period of lactation it is necessary to decide a point on stopping breastfeeding.

12. Driving

It is not recommended to drive vehicles during Ursodiol therapy. A vehicle driving is possible only in the period of preventive treatment.
