IMMUNIZATIONS: VACCINES FOR ADULTS
Vaccinations aren't just for children. Adults can also receive protection against illnesses:
The flu. It may not seem a formidable threat, but the flu (the common name for influenza) can be a serious illness. It kills thousands of Americans every year. It poses a special danger to the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.
The flu is really any one of millions of different viruses. Fortunately, scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta are always busily at work formulating new vaccines against the latest mutation of the flu bug.
Who should get a flu shot? In general, anyone who is concerned about getting the flu. However, some people should take the flu threat more seriously:
People over the age of 65
People whose immune systems are impaired by AIDS or another chronic illness
People who reside in chronic-care facilities
All health care workers and public-service employees (police officers, firefighters, child-care workers, and so on)
Those who suffer from chronic lung problems, such as asthma or cystic fibrosis
Smokers
People who are taking medications that suppress their immune systems
People with diabetes
Pregnant women (after the first trimester only)
Children who must take aspirin on a regular basis (a flu shot may help prevent the onset of a serious condition called Reye syndrome that is associated with aspirin use in children)
Hepatitis B. Hepatitis  is a serious inflammation of the liver. It is far more contagious than HIV, although it is transmitted in many of the same ways (through semen, blood, and other bodily fluids). Like HIV, it can also be passed through the placenta of a pregnant woman to the fetus.
Symptoms of acute hepatitis  infection include jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, fever, loss of energy, and loss of appetite. Severe cases can lead to degeneration of the liver and death.
The immunization is now routinely given to children and is also recommended for those at the highest risk of contracting hepatitis B:
Health care workers
Patients receiving kidney dialysis
Tourists planning on visiting Asia (where the disease is common)
Intravenous drug users
Individuals who engage in unprotected sexual intercourse with multiple partners (or with one infected individual)
Immunization against hepatitis  is done by injection. The effects of the vaccine usually last for several years.
Pneumonia. Pneumonia, which is also called pneumonitis, is an umbrella term for an entire category of illnesses causing an inflammation of the lungs. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or chemical irritants. Its severity can range from a simple upper-respiratory infection to a life-threatening illness.
About 1.5 percent of Americans get pneumonia every year, and many die from it. (Because pneumonia is often a secondary infection caused by another illness, it is often difficult to ascertain whether the cause of death was the primary illness or the pneumonia.) Fortunately a pneumonia vaccine does exist.
The elderly are particularly susceptible to lung infections. The vaccine is recommended for everyone at age 65 (sooner if the individual is at an increased risk). People with chronic heart or lung disease, diabetes, Hodgkin disease, or any other disorder that impairs the immune system are at increased risk and should be immunized. The effectiveness of pneumonia immunization depends on the overall health of the patient receiving it.
