4. Action

The drug takes hypotensive and anti-arrhythmic effect. It reduces the frequency and severity of stenocardia attacks and reduces the probability of the emergence of recurrent myocardial infarction.

5. Posology and Administration

Posology and administration should be set up individually. When there is hypertension it is usually administered 50 mg each daily in 1 or 2 intakes. When there are stenocardia, arrhythmia or necessity of prevention of migraine attacks there is administered 100-200 mg each daily in 2 intakes (in the morning and in the evening). As prevention measures against myocardial infarction there is administered 200 mg a day in 2 intakes (in the morning and in the evening). When there is hyperthyrosis it is administered 100 mg each daily in 2 intakes (in the morning and in the evening). The maximal daily dose is 400 mg.

6. Counterindications

- АV block of the II-nd and the III-d degree;
- bradycardia;
- arterial hypotension;
- acute and chronic heart failure.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

The drug should be withdrawn little by little during 1-2 weeks.
Metoprolol may enhance the performance of anti-diabetic medications.

8. Interface with Other Medications

The use of the drug and/or its combination with some other medication is possible only on a doctor’s order. Consult your doctor if you take other medicines.

9. Overdosing

The first signs of overdosing emerge after 20 minutes - 2 hours after an intake.
Symptoms: bradycardia, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, blue limbs, significant drop of arterial tension, arrhythmia; if overdosing is acute there may be cardiogenic shock, loss of consciousness, coma to the extent of heart arrest.

10. Side Effects

On the part of nervous system: undue fatigability, weakness, headache, speeding down of psychic and motor reactions. Seldom: convulsions, depression, psychic tension, detraction, drowsiness, insomnia, “nightmare” dreams, confusion of consciousness or short-term memory loss, hallucinations. On the part of sense organs: seldom – decrement in visual acuity, decrement of secretion of tear liquid, dry and painful eyes, conjunctivitis, buzzing in ears, decrement of hearing. On the part of cardio-vascular system: bradycardia, low arterial tension, dizziness, sometimes loss of consciousness, edemas, puffiness of feet and/or lower part of legs, labored breath, lower extremities coldness. On the part of intestinal system: nausea, vomiting, pain in the stomach, dry mouth, constipations or diarrhea, in specific cases – compromised liver function (dark urine, ochrodermia), flavor reversion. On the part of respiratory system: stuffy nose, bronchospasm, labored breath. Allergic reactions: hives, skin itching, rash.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

In cases of pregnancy and breastfeeding the use of Metoprolol is possible only in cases of emergency.

12. Driving

Patients whose activity requires alertness should decide the matter of outpatient administration of Metoprolol only after assessment of individual reaction of the patient
