Theophylline enlarges bronchi, blood vessels, mainly the vessels of brain, skin and kidneys. The drug decreases lung vessel resistance and tension in lesser circulation.
Theophylline takes spasmolytic effect to peripheral veins, increases renal blood flow; it takes a moderately manifested urinative effect.
Theophylline takes stimulating effect on respiration center; it enhances heart rate and heart force.
- Posology and Administration
Posology and administration are to be set up individually. An average starting dose is 400 mg /daily. Upon condition of good tolerance a dose may be increased approximately by 25% from the starting one every 2-3 days up to attainment of the optimal therapeutic effect. Maximal daily doses which may be applied without a control of blood concentration are: children of 1-9 years of age — 24 mg/kg, 9-12 years of age — 20 mg/kg, 12-16 years of age — 18 mg/kg; patients of 16 years of age and older — 13 mg/kg or 900 mg/daily.

Age under three years, hypersensitivity to Theophylline, epilepsy, increased readiness for convulsions, gastric and duodenal ulcer.

With caution it should be used in severe stenocardia, in acute periods of myocardial infarction and heart failure. Likewise caution is needed in evidenced compromised liver and kidney function, during pregnancy and lactation. In severe diseases of cardio-vascular system, also in elderly patients a Theophylline dose should be decreased.

TYPES OF FOOD ALLERGIES: CYCLIC ALLERGY
People suffering from what he identified as cyclic food allergies can be exposed to a particular dietary allergen or group of them occasionally and not react to the foods even though they are capable of causing important symptoms. For example, you may be allergic to potatoes, and yet it is very possible that once every five to seven days, you will be able to eat a large portion of potatoes during a single meal with no ill effects. But if you should eat them every day for a week, it is more than likely that you will come down with some allergic disorders - flulike generalized aches and pains, joint pains, itching, abdominal distention with cramps or nausea, and severe fatigue with headache and depression or general irritability. Or you might dislike store-bought tomatoes and rarely eat them, but when you produce a bumper crop in your garden, you really overdo it and load up for five successive days, then suddenly find yourself flat on your back, feeling restless, nervous, and confused, with a severe migraine headache, a very stuffy nose, ringing in your ears, and nagging muscle and joint pains, and you are just too sick and dizzy to do anything but try to get to the bathroom in time to prevent an "accident" with your loose bowels and/or attacks of urinary urgency.
In cyclic allergies, the symptom-evoking reactions will subside as soon as the internal level of the offending substance drops to a point below the affected person's individual "critical" level - his or her allergic threshold. As the growing season ends, the excessive ingestion resulting in tomato overexposure ends. And with the passage of time - three or four weeks to several months - a time factor that varies from food to food and is unpredictable in each instance - you may once again tolerate small or even large amounts of the food allergen (tomato) if your food-sensitive (intolerant) tissues are not exposed to this food too frequently thereafter. But if you are not careful, you can easily lose your tolerance again. In most cases the symptoms of cyclic food allergy can be prevented by controlling the interval between exposures. You usually do not have to eliminate the known dietary troublemaker permanently - only long enough to regain a state of tolerance that can be maintained with little difficulty.
Over a period of time a food-sensitive person may have compiled an impressive and increasingly restrictive list of foods that he or she is convinced must be avoided in order to remain comfortable. Many nutritious foods are often permanently eliminated from that food-allergic person's diet because they caused important symptoms in the recent or distant past, and there was no awareness of the nature of cyclic food allergy.
The long list of prohibited foods often leads to important long-term problems in diet planning, as the food-intolerant individual, unaware of the positive side of cyclic food allergy, unnecessarily limits the number of foods he or she feels able to eat. In time the "permanent" restriction of many foods leads to cumulative allergic food reactions from avoidable and harmful overexposure to previously tolerated foods - the undesirable and preventable effect of the allergic victim's overexposure to a limited selection of formerly "safe" foods. Food allergy, poorly understood, begets food allergy!
And things keep getting worse if one is not aware of the plus side of cyclic allergy. In cyclic food allergy there is at least a fifty-fifty chance that tolerance will be regained if the offending foods are avoided for a biologic rest of three weeks to six months. It is not unusual to find that even many of the very worst dietary offenders can be eaten without any ill effects - including the return of your arthritis - if they are not eaten too often. When tolerance to specific foods has been regained, it can be permanent if the former culprits are eaten once every five to seven days. The negative side of reversible cyclic allergy will soon make its unwanted and distressing reappearance - food intolerance - if once again a cumulative (buildup) reaction is deliberately provoked by "overdoing it." In this situation the control of your state of health is really in your own hands. In many instances it's entirely up to you whether you have arthritis or not.

Twenty-five centuries ago Hippocrates noted "the commencement of a serious disease when they have merely taken twice in the same day the same food which they have been in the custom of taking once." Hippocrates also observed that the ancient Greeks were not harmed by fasting, but after eating certain foods following a fast, they became acutely ill.
