4. Action

Efavirenz changes a genetic material of HIV (RNA) into a form of DNA. This change should have happened before the HIV genetic code unites with a proper genetic code of the infected cell.

5. Posology and Administration

• HIV-infection within a combined therapy: in adults it will be 600 mg once daily. A daily dose for children with the body mass of 13–15 kg will be 200 mg, for 15–20 kg it will be 250 mg, for 20–25 kg it will be 300 mg, for 25–32,5 kg it will be 350 mg, for 32,5–40 kg it will be 400 mg, for more than 40 kg it will be 600 mg. For mending tolerance the first 2-4 weeks it is well to take the drug before bedtime.
• Chemo prophylaxis of HIV infection after a contact with infected HIV-material (sexual contacts with a HIV-positive person, injections and cuts during the work with contaminated HIV-material, ingress of this material on mucosae or damaged skin).
It is recommended to take Efavirenz on an empty stomach, before bedtime. Such administration results in the least side effects.

Hypersensitivity, pregnancy, breastfeeding period. Care should be taken if there is liver or kidney failure, alcoholism, abuse of narcotics, cerebral affection, babyhood (under 3 years of age), body mass less than 13 kg.
