Tetracycline
Tetracycline is indicated both for oral and external use. Oral intake is administrated to patients suffering from pneumonia, bronchitis, purulent pleurisy, subacute septic endocarditis, bacterial and amebic dysentery, whooping cough, angina, scarlet fever, gonorrhea, brucellosis, tularemia, flea-borne typhus and recurrent one, parrot disease, to patient suffering from infectious diseases of urine tracts, chronic cholecystitis, purulent meningitis and other infectious diseases provoked by microorganisms, sensitive to this antibiotic. Tetracycline may also be used for the prevention of infectious aggravations in surgery. Tetracycline is to be administered locally in infectious diseases of eyes, burns, phlegmons, mastitis etc.
A pluripotential antibiotic. It performs bacteriostatically. The drug is active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms.
Before the administration of the drug to a patient it is well to determine sensitivity of the microflora that has provoked the disease in the patient. Adults are to be administered orally 0,25 g every 6 hours, if needed 2 g a day. In children over 7 years of age are to be administered 25 mg/kg every 6 hours. Capsules should be swallowed without chewing. To adults tetracycline-depot is administered 1 tablet every 12 hours, in subsequent days - 1 tablet daily (0,375 g). To children are administered 1 tablet every 12 hours, whereas in subsequent days it should be administered 1 tablet a day (0,12 g). Suspension is to be administered to children 25-30 mg/kg daily in 4 intakes every 6 hours (1 drop - 6 mg of Tetracycline). Syrup for adults is to be administered 17 ml daily in 4 intakes; for the preparation of such quantity of syrup 1-2 g of granules are needed. To children syrup is to be administered on the basis of 20-30 mg granules/kg of the body mass 4 times a day (1 ml - 30 mg of Tetracycline). For the preparation of syrup 40 ml of water (4 measuring spoons) are poured out to a flacon and shaked up.
Tetracycline is counterindicated if there is a case of hypersensitivity to it and to related antibiotics, also in fungus diseases. With caution the drug should be used in kidney diseases, in leukopenia (level decrease of leukocytes in blood). It is not well to administer Tetracycline (and other drugs of this group) to pregnant women and children under 8 years of age. The drug should be administered to patients with the indication of allergic reactions in the anamnesis (hospital chart).
The acceptance of Tetracycline in the period of teeth development may be a reason of a long- term coloring of the teeth in yellow-grey-brown.
In combination with other medications it may provoke aggravation of side effects; in this respect such administration is counterindicated without a doctor’s order.
Symptoms: kidney failure, encephalopathy, disorientation, vomiting.
Tetracycline usually is well tolerated, but as other pluripotential antibacterial performance antibiotics may provoke side effects: decrease of appetite, nausea, vomiting, functional disturbance of bowels (mild or severe flux), changes in mucus coats of the tongue or intestinal tract (glossitis /inflammation of the tongue/stomatitis /inflammation of mucus coat of the mouth cavity/gastritis/inflammation of the stomach/proctitis/inflammation of the straight intestine), allergic skin reactions, Quincke’s edema (allergic edema) etc. may emerge.
The use of tetracyclines in pregnancy is not recommended, because they penetrate trough placenta and may provoke severe disturbances of the development of bone tissue.
During the treatment one should avoid potentially hazardous kinds of activities, which require elevated attention and quickness of mental and motional reactions.
