4. Action

Felodipine isolates the processes of activation and contraction in myocardium and smooth muscles of vessels. The drug reduces arterial tension.

5. Posology and Administration

Felodipine should be taken orally (in the morning regardless of meal). Tablets should be swallowed in whole, without breaking and chewing; it is recommended to rinsing them with water only. When there is arterial hypertension it should be taken 5 mg each once daily, if needed, a dose may be corrected after intervals of not less than 2 weeks, a supporting dose will be 5-10 mg/daily. Elderly patients may receive a lesser dose of about 2.5 mg/daily. When there is stenocardia a dose may be 5 mg each/daily, if needed a dose may be about 10 mg/daily. The maximal daily dose is 20 mg.

6. Counterindications

    — pregnancy, including early period;
    — tachycardia;
    — arterial hypotension (arterial tension less than 90 mm. of mercury column);
    — collapse, vascular and cardiogenic shock;
    — the first week of acute myocardial infarction (and the next 1 month);
    — evidenced vascular failure;
    — hypersensitivity.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

Felodipine should be administered with caution. Sick sinus syndrome (evidenced bradycardia, tachycardia), chronic heart failure, lightly or moderately low arterial tension, aortal stenosis, mitral stenosis; acute myocardial infarction (and during 1 month after it), severe liver and/or kidney failure, elderly age, the age lesser than 18 years (efficiency and safety of the use are not established).

8. Interface with Other Medications

Felodipine is not recommended to take together with other medications without a doctor’s order. Otherwise there may emerge a series of unexpected side effects.

9. Overdosing

Symptoms: dilatation of peripheral vessels with evidenced fall of arterial tension and rhythm disturbance of heartbeat.

10. Side Effects

On the part of cardiovascular system: tachycardia, low arterial tension; spot reddening of face skin covering.
On the part of nervous system: headache, dizziness, fatigability, weakness are possible.
Allergic reactions: skin rash, itch.
Others: water retention in the zone of ankle joint and gums puffiness are possible.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

Felodipine is counterindicated in the period of pregnancy and lactation.

12. Driving

In the treatment period care should be taken when you drive vehicles or if you are engaged in other potentially hazardous kinds of activities which require elevated concentration of attention and quickness of psychomotor action.
