3. Indications for Use.

   – treatment of neuropathic pain in adults of 18 years old of age and more;
   – monotherapy of partial convulsions with a secondary generalization and without it, in adults and in children of more than 12 years of age;
   – as an additional medical drug for the treatment of partial convulsions with a secondary generalization and without it, in adults and children of 3 years of age and more.

Gabapentin has anti-convulsive, sedative action.

5. Posology and Administration

The medical drug should be taken orally regardless of meal. Administered for epilepsy. Adults and children of 12 years of age: the starting dose is 300 mg 3 times a day in the first day, efficient dose should be 900-3600 mg/daily. The maximal daily dose is 3600 mg (divided into 3 equal intakes). The maximal interval between 3 times daily intakes should not exceed 12 hours. The following scheduling administration (staging of a dose selection) is possible. If a dose is 900 mg: the first day - 300 mg once a day, the second day - 300 mg 2 times a day, the third day - 300 mg 3 times a day; if a dose is 1200 mg: 400 mg once daily, 400 mg twice daily, 400 mg 3 times daily in the first, the second and the third day consequently. Children of 3-12 years of age: an efficient dose is 25-35 mg/kg/daily in three equal intakes. A dose may be titrated up to an efficient one during 3 days: 10 mg/kg/daily in the first day, 20 mg/kg/daily in the second day and 30 mg/kg/daily in the third day. In a long-lasting clinical study tolerance of the drug in doses up to 40-50 mg/kg/daily was good. The following scheduling administration is possible: when the body mass is 17-25 kg it should be administered 600 mg/daily consequently, if the body mass is 26-36 kg кг - 900 mg/daily, if the body mass is 37-50 kg - 1200 mg/daily, if the body mass is 51-72 kg - 1800 mg/daily. Neuropathy in adults: the starting dose is 300 mg 3 times daily, if needed the dose may be gradually increased up to 3600 mg/daily as a maximum. For compromised kidneys function patients a dose should be administered strictly on personality measures.

6. Counterindications

Safety and efficiency of Gabapentin administration in children of less than 3 years of age as a supplementary epilepsy therapy and in children of fewer than 12 years of age as a monotherapy are not determined. Safety and efficiency of neuropathy treatment in patients less than 18 years of age are not determined.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

If there is a need to decrease a dose, withdraw the drug or change it for an alternative remedy, the process of it should be gradual, during, as a minimum, one week.

8. Interface with Other Medications

The use of other medical drugs together with Gabapentin is possible only on a doctor’s order.

9. Overdosing

In case of the emergence in adults of drowsiness, ataxy, dizziness, undue fatigability, nausea and/or vomiting, body mass increase, and in children the emergence of drowsiness, hyperexcitability and hostility the treatment should be stopped and a doctor’s opinion should be taken.

10. Side Effects

Rise of arterial tension, nausea, vomiting, pain in the stomach, dry mouth or dry throat, constipation, diarrhea, rise of appetite, pain in the back, drowsiness, nervosism, seldom – headache, amnesia, depression, insomnia, confusion of consciousness, psychic tension, hostility, ringing in the ears, extremely seldom – bedwetting, decrement of potency.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

During pregnancy growth impairment of the fetus is possible; therefore it may be used only on very important vital factors. Gabapentin excretes with breast milk. Its influence on breastfed newborns is unknown that is why breastfeeding mothers must use it only in the cases when the advantage for the mother evidently weighs out the risk.

12. Driving

Gabapentin affects psychomotor state of the patient, therefore during the treatment it is necessary to give up on potentially hazardous activities.
