Pneumonic tuberculosis; extrapulmonary tuberculosis.

4. Action

The drug quickly penetrates into a contagious cell and a bacterial one and interrupts its structure. The performance of the drug develops after 1–2 days.

5. Posology and Administration

The drug is to be administered strictly on individual basis, under a strict doctor’s control; this report is not indicated for self-medication.
In adults it is administrated on the basis of 25 mg/kg single-shot daily or 50 mg/kg 2–3 times a week orally, in the morning after breakfast. In children 25 mg/kg single-shot in the morning after breakfast. The highest daily dose for children is 1 g.
For patients over 65 years of age recommendations are the same as for children of early adolescence period.

6. Counterindications

Inflammation of visual nerve; cataract; diabetes; inflammatory diseases of eyes; severe kidney failure; podagra; pregnancy; lactation; children under 13 years of age.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

In kidney failure patients an Ethambutol dose should be reduced due to the accumulation of the drug in the body. Before Ethambutol therapy ophthalmologic control should be periodically carried out: assessment of eye grounds, visual fields, sharpness of vision and color sense. It is recommended to carry out a periodical control of liver and kidney functions and general blood analysis.

8. Interface with Other Medications

Interaction with other medications may give unpredictable side effects. In this respect it is recommended to inform your attending doctor which medications you are taking or have taken recently. On the question of combination of medicines you should take advice of your doctor.

During pregnancy it should be taken only on strict indications, assumed favor and potential risk for the fetus should be measured.
During the treatment breastfeeding should be ceased.

Due to possible vision disorders (reduction of acuty of vision, failure of color sense towards green and red colors) it is not well to drive vehicles and to operate moving machinery during Ethambutol therapy.
