Generic Moduretic (5mg + 50)
HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE WITH AMILORIDE
Used for the treatment of excess fluid accumulation of various origin including that of heart or liver origin, and for high blood pressure, etc. This product is a combination of two "diuretic" agents (i.e. agents which act on the kidney and cause a greater quantity of urine to be passed). One of the agents also helps to conserve the mineral potassium in the body.
Reasons for treating high blood pressure: it has been found that the higher the blood pressure, the greater the risk of complications such as stroke, heart failure and damage to organs such as the kidneys, eyes, etc. For this reason, patients with high blood pressure are given medication to reduce these risks. It is important for the treatment of this disease, that patients take their medicines conscientiously and regularly as prescribed, even if they feel quite well in themselves at the time.
Precautions: patients must not of their own accord take any additional potassium supplements during therapy with this preparation, as such additional medication could cause the body levels of potassium to become too high. This includes salt substitutes that contain potassium refer pharmacist or doctor. Nursing mothers should consult their doctor regarding continuation of breast feeding if taking this agent. Patients with diabetes or gout may require some adjustment of their usual therapy - refer doctor.
Elderly patients: there have been occasional reports in elderly patients of excessive sodium loss associated with this agent if any gastric upset, loss of appetite or unusual mental confusion is noted in an elderly patient, the doctor should be re-consulted to review the medication. Also potassium levels may sometimes be checked by a blood test.
