Ingredient: Glyburide

Dosage Form: Tablet: 1.25 mg; 2.5 mg; 5 mg.
Use: Treatment of diabetes mellitus not controlled by diet and exercise alone.
Minor Side Effects: Diarrhea; dizziness; fatigue; headache; heartburn; loss of appetite; nausea; stomach upset; sun sensitivity; weakness. Most of these side effects, if they occur, should subside as your body adjusts to the medication. Tell your doctor about any that are persistent or particularly bothersome.
Major Side Effects: Blood disorders; breathing difficulties; dark urine; fluid retention; itching; light-colored stools; low blood sugar; muscle cramps; rash; sore throat and fever; tingling in the hands and feet; unusual bleeding or bruising; yellowing of the eyes or skin. Notify your doctor if you develop any major side effects.
Contraindications: This drug should not be used for the treatment of juvenile (insulin dependent) or unstable diabetes. This drug should not be used by diabetics subject to acidosis or ketosis or by diabetics with a history of diabetic coma.
• Persons with severe liver, kidney, or thyroid disorders should not use this drug.
• Avoid using this drug if you are allergic to sulfonylureas or sulfa drugs. Be sure your doctor knows if you have such an allergy.
• In the presence of infections, fever, or severe trauma, your doctor may advise you to use insulin instead of this medication - at least during the acute stage.
Warnings: This drug should be used cautiously during pregnancy. If you are currently pregnant, or become pregnant while taking this drug, talk to your doctor about its use; insulin therapy may be indicated instead of the medication.
• This drug should be used with caution by nursing women; children; and persons with liver, kidney or thyroid disorders.
• Thiazide diuretics and beta-blocking drugs commonly used to treat high blood pressure may interfere with your control of diabetes.
• This drug interacts with steroids, estrogens, oral contraceptives, phenothiazines, phenytoin, isoniazid, thyroid hormones, aspirin, anti-inflammatories, and diuretics. If you are taking any drugs of these types, talk to your doctor about your use of glyburide. If you are not sure about the type or contents of your medications, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
• Do not drink alcohol or take any other medications unless directed to do so by your doctor. Be especially careful with nonprescription cough and cold remedies.
• Be sure you can recognize signs of low blood sugar and know what to do if you begin to experience these symptoms. Signs of low blood sugar include chills, cold sweat, drowsiness, headache, nausea, nervousness, rapid pulse, tremors, and weakness. If these symptoms develop, eat or drink something containing sugar and call your doctor. Poor diet, malnutrition, strenuous exercise, and alcohol consumption may lead to low blood sugar.
• While taking this drug, call your doctor if you develop an infection, fever, sore throat, rash, itching, unusual bleeding or bruising, dark urine, light-colored stools, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.
Comments: Take this drug at the same time every day. It is usually taken 30 minutes before breakfast unless directed otherwise. If stomach upset occurs, this drug may be taken with food.
• Avoid prolonged or unprotected exposure to sunlight while taking this drug, as it makes you more sensitive to the sun's burning rays.
• While taking this drug, test your urine and/or blood as prescribed. It is important that you understand what the results mean.
• Studies have shown that a good diet and exercise program are extremely important in controlling diabetes. Discuss the use of this drug with your doctor. Persons taking this drug must carefully watch their diet and exercise program and avoid infection through good personal hygiene.
• There are other drugs similar to this (Orinase, Diabinese, Glucotrol) that vary slightly in their activity. Certain persons who do not benefit from one oral antidiabetic agent of this type may find another one more effective. Discuss this with your doctor.
• Do not discontinue taking this medication without consulting your doctor.
• It is advised that persons taking this drug carry a medical alert card or wear a medical alert bracelet.
