Similarly, the frequency of congenital anomalies was no greater than expected among the children of 7575 women treated with hydrochlorothiazide anytime during pregnancy in one study or the children of 506 women treated during the second half of gestation in another investigation.
Studies in mice and rats suggest that treatment of pregnant women with Hydrochlorothiazide in usual therapeutic doses is unlikely to increase the children's risk of malformations greatly.
Neonatal thrombocytopenia has been observed after maternal use of hydrochlorothiazide and similar diuretics late in pregnancy. The risk of this problem is unknown but must be small because symptomatic thrombocytopenia was not observed in any of the infants of 506 women treated with hydrochlorothiazide late in pregnancy in the series reported by Kraus et al.

Risk Related to Breast-feeding
Hydrochlorothiazide is excreted in the breast milk. The amount of hydrochlorothiazide that the nursing infant would be expected to ingest is between Suppression of lactation has been described for other thiazide diuretics, but not for hydrochlorothiazide. The American Academy of Pediatrics regards hydrochlorothiazide to be safe to use.
