MEFLOQUINETrade Names: Lariam How Available: tablet Drug Group: Anti-malaria drug Prescription: Yes Major Uses: Mefloquine is a medication used for treatment and prevention of malaria. It is usually only used for some types of malaria (certain types of falciparum malaria) that cannot be treated or prevented by using safer medications. How it Works: Unlike other medications used for malaria, mefloquine can kill parasites within red cells. Usual Dosage: For adults: one tablet per week to begin one week before entering the malaria area and continuing for four weeks after leaving the area is the usual dose to prevent malaria. Six weeks treatment is the minimum. Dosage is less for the prevention of malaria in children. Higher doses are used to treat established malaria infections. Common Side-Effects: Dizziness, unsteadiness, diarrhoea, loss of appetite and headache are all potential side-effects. Mefloquine may impair liver function. Actions with other Drugs: Quinine may lead to increased side-effects if taken with mefloquine as they are closely related. Pregnancy, Breastfeeding: It is considered dangerous to use mefloquine in pregnancy, due to the potential risk of birth defects. Women taking mefloquine should use contraception to avoid falling pregnant for three months following the last dose. Mefloquine does pass into breast milk, so bottle feeding is preferred while the medication is used. Special Features, Comments: Patients with liver or kidney or heart disease should avoid mefloquine treatment. Over-dosage with mefloquine can lead to serious heart rhythm disturbances.
