Major Uses: The cream is used for fungal skin infections caused by most types of fungus. Tablets are generally reserved for skin infections which don't respond to topical therapy, for severe infections or for infections where local therapy is difficult. Tablets are also used for fungal nail infections.
How it Works: The medication prevents the formation of a molecule vital for the survival of the fungus.
Usual Dosage: Terbinafine cream is applied once or twice per day, while the usual adult dose of the medication is 250mg per day in a single dose or two doses. The duration of oral treatment depends on the condition being treated and can vary from one week to three months (sometimes six months). Oral terbinafine is not recommended for use in children.
Common Side-Effects: The oral tablet can sometimes cause nausea, flatulence, vomiting, abdominal cramps and discomfort, anorexia and diarrhoea. A rash may occur. Other side-effects are less likely. The cream may cause itchiness, redness or stinging, but this rarely necessitates ceasing treatment.
Actions with other Drugs: The rate of removal of terbinafine from the blood may be decreased by rifampicin and increased by cimetidine. Both these effects are due to interference with the metabolism of terbinafine by the liver.
There are no known interactions with the cream.
Pregnancy, Breastfeeding: It is not recommended that oral terbinafine be used in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless thought necessary. There are not thought to be any problems associated with the use of the topical cream.
Special Features, Comments: Terbinafine may occasionally affect liver function, and oral treatment should be used with caution in people with a history of liver problems. A reduced dose of terbinafine may be necessary in these situations and also in people with impaired kidney function.
