Ingredient: estradiol
Dosage Forms: Tablet: 1 mg; 2 mg.
Vaginal cream (per gram): 0.1 mg
Uses: Estrogen replacement therapy; treatment of symptoms of menopause; treatment of some cases of breast cancer or prostrate cancer.
Minor Side Effects: Abdominal cramps; bloating; breast tenderness; change in sexual desire; diarrhea; dizziness; headache (mild); increased sensitivity to sunlight; loss of appetite; nausea; swelling of the feet or ankles; vomiting; weight loss or gain. Most of these side effects, if they occur, should subside as your body adjusts to the medication. Tell your doctor about any that are persistent or particularly bothersome.
Major Side Effects: Allergic rash; breathing difficulties; cervical changes; change in menstrual patterns; chest pain; dark urine; depression; fluid retention; fungal infections; increased blood pressure; loss of coordination; migraine; pain in calves; painful urination; severe headache; skin irritation; slurring of speech; vaginal itching; vaginal bleeding; vision changes; yellowing of the eyes or skin. Notify your doctor if you notice any major side effects.
Contraindications: This drug should not be taken by persons who have experienced an allergic reaction to estrogen. This drug should not be used by pregnant or nursing women, by persons with blood clotting disorders or a history of such disorders because of estrogen use, or by those persons with certain cancers or vaginal bleeding. Consult your doctor immediately if this drug has been prescribed for you and you have any of these conditions.

• This drug should be used cautiously by people who have asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, gallbladder disease, heart disease, high blood levels of calcium, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease, migraine, porphyria, uterine fibroid tumors, or a history of depression and by nursing women. Be sure your doctor knows if any of these conditions applies to you.
• This drug may retard bone growth and therefore should be used cautiously by young patients who have not yet completed puberty.
• This drug interacts with oral anticoagulants, barbiturates, rifampin, ampicillin, some antibiotics, anticonvulsants, and steroids; if you are currently taking any drugs of these types, consult your doctor about their use. If you are unsure of the type or contents of your medications, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
• This drug may alter the body's tolerance to glucose. Diabetics should monitor urine sugar or blood glucose and report any changes to their doctors.
• Notify your doctor immediately if you experience abnormal vaginal bleeding, breast lumps, pain in the calves or chest, sudden shortness of breath, coughing up of blood, severe headaches, loss of coordination, changes in vision or skin color, or dark urine.
• This drug may affect a number of laboratory tests; remind your doctor that you are taking it if you are scheduled for any tests.
• This drug may increase your sensitivity to sun. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, and wear a sunscreen outdoors.
• You should have a complete physical examination at least once a year while you are on this medication.
Comments: This drug is usually taken for 21 days followed by a seven-day rest.
• Compliance is mandatory with this drug. Take it exactly as prescribed.
• This drug is probably effective in preventing estrogen-deficiency osteoporosis when used in conjunction with calcium supplements and exercise.
• Special applicators are available with the vaginal cream to ensure proper dosing. Insert the cream high into the vagina unless otherwise directed.
