TERBUTALINE

A bronchodilator for bronchial asthma and for reversible bronchospasm which may occur with bronchitis and emphysema.
Unlabeled uses: Oral and IV terbutaline have successfully inhibited premature labor. Initiate IV use at 10 mcg/min; titrate upward to a maximum of 80 mcg/min. Maintain IV dosage at the minimum effective dose for 4 hours. Oral doses of 2.5 mg every 4 to 6 hours have been used as maintenance therapy until term.

Administration and Dosage
Oral-
Adults and children > 15 years of age: 5 mg, given at 6-hour intervals, 3 times/day during waking hours. If side effects are pronounced, dose may be reduced to 2.5 mg 3 times/day. Do not exceed 15 mg in 24 hours.
Children (12 to 15 years of age): 2.5 mg 3 times/day. Do not exceed 7.5 mg in 24 hours. Not recommended for children Parenteral - Usual dose is 0.25 mg SC into the lateral deltoid area. If significant improvement does not occur in 15 to 30 minutes, administer a second 0.25 mg dose. Do not exceed a total dose of 0.5 mg in 4 hours. If a patient fails to respond to a second 0.25 mg dose within 15 to 30 minutes, consider other therapeutic measures.
