After a fibrin clot forms in response to vascular injury, the fibrinolytic system acts to prevent excessive clotting by converting plasminogen into the fibrin-dissolving enzyme plasmin. Plasmin breaks down fibrin and fibrinogen into fragments, or split products, labeled X, Y, D, and E, in order of decreasing molecular weight. These products may combine with fibrin monomers to prevent polymerization; that is, the fragments retain some anticoagulant activity. An excess of such products in circulation leads to abnormally active fibrinolysis and to coagulation disorders, such as disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
Fibrin split products (FSP) are detected by an immunoprecipitation reaction, in which the serum left in a blood sample after clotting is mixed on a slide with latex particles that carry D and E split products. These products adhere in clumps if fibrin or fibrinogen degradation products are present in the serum.
