In 1940, the average woman lived 65.2 years; the average man, 60.8-a difference of a little more than 4 years. Over the course of the century that gap has widened to about 7 years. And though it appears that males are making slight headway-the National Center for Health Statistics currently predicts that women will outlive men by only 6.4 years-the fact remains that men still die more often and earlier than women from all leading causes of death, especially heart disease, cancer, and accidents.
