Dosage Form: Capsule: 10 mg (pink); 40 mg (yellow)
Use: Treatment of severe cystic acne
Minor Side Effects: Changes in skin color; conjunctivitis; dry lips and mouth; edema; fatigue; headache; increased susceptibility to herpes simplex virus; increased susceptibility to sunburn; indigestion; inflammation of lips; muscle pain; peeling of palms and soles; rash; thinning of hair
Major Side Effects: Black stools; bruising; burning or tingling sensation of the skin; changes in menstrual cycle; dizziness; hives; increased susceptibility to bone changes; respiratory infections; skin infection; visual disturbances; weight loss.
Contraindications: This drug should not be used by a woman who is, who thinks she is, or who intends to become, pregnant. This drug should not be used by people who are allergic to parabens (a preservative). Consult your doctor immediately if this drug has been prescribed for you and you have either of these conditions.
Warnings: This drug should not be used in conjunction with vitamin A supplements.
• This drug may increase blood fat levels (triglycerides, lipoproteins, cholesterol), especially in overweight or diabetic persons, in persons with increased alcohol intake, and in persons with a family history of high blood fat levels.
• This drug should be used cautiously by women who are breastfeeding. Be sure your doctor knows you are breast-feeding a baby.
Comments: During the course of treatment with this drug, occasionally there may be an apparent increase in skin lesions with crusting. This is usually not a reason to discontinue its use.
• This drug may affect the results of blood and urine tests.
• This drug is usually used only after other acne treatments have failed.
